Poppleton lands Brabazon Trophy

Yorkshire’s Nick Poppleton won the Brabazon Trophy in dramatic style when he chipped in on the second play-off hole at Frilford Heath Golf Club, Oxfordshire. The Wath golfer was chasing leader Wilco Nienaber from South Africa for most of the final round before a brave play on the 16th hole resulted in an eagle which saw him tie the Springbok on 16 under and force a play-off in the English men’s open stroke play championship. The South African No 1 had blitzed round this morning in seven-under 65 to get to 13-under after 54 holes, two clear of Poppleton who works part-time at the Peter Cowen Academy in Rotherham. “I’m coached by Nick Huby who manages the academy and I’m also very privil

Royal result for King

JOHN KING: PHOTO GETTY IMAGES Less than 24 hours before Harry and Meghan tied the knot, long serving Lindrick professional John King made a royal comeback to capture the Silversea Senior PGA Championship a few miles down the road from Windsor Castle at Foxhills. Six and five strokes adrift of leaders Mark Ridley and John Gould respectively at the start of the final round, King kept his game together in regal fashion while they faltered. Ridley, who hails from the land of the prince bishops and is attached to South Moor Golf Club in Durham, was unable to reproduce the form that had seen him lead the tournament at the end of the first and second rounds and posted a four-over-par total of 77

Alex on target for US Amateur

Hallamshire’s Alex Fitzpatrick finished fourth behind wire to wire winner Robin Dawson in the Flogas Irish Amateur Open Championship at Royal County Down, but jumped into the top 50 in the World amateur rankings. Dawson finished four strokes clear of the field on two under par after carding a final round of 77. The 22-year-old Tramore international began the day with a six-shot cushion and while it was plain sailing for much of the afternoon, he very nearly lost his grip on the tournament at the 15th where he ran up a triple bogey seven after sending his second shot into the gorse. From what had seemed an unassailable position Dawson saw his lead halved from six to three. Alex Gleeson (The
